2023-2024 Season:
HOLD/RELEASE
Sometimes liberation isn’t about fixing things. Sometimes (or more than sometimes) our institutions betray us. Sometimes a situation is fundamentally shitty and irreparable. Sometimes it’s about living in that feeling. And then what? Sometimes it’s about making it work, about how we breathe and go on, about how we still laugh anyways.
This season, we aim to explore how we make do in an unjust world through two dramatic comedies. (Or maybe they’re comedic dramas? You can decide where the balance between grief, rage, and humor is). We reject the notion that trauma exists somehow separate from everyday life, that processing it is some sort of rarified internal work. It is integrated into our laughter, relationships, and communities; it is tied to our immense capacity to support each other through every moment.

A young woman, unable to accept her brother’s suicide, goes to the Land of the Dead in search of him. Meanwhile, in the Land of the Dead, the brother finds himself in the company of the Goddess of Mercy (“a secretly sadistic lady”) and the Monkey King (“a sneaky fucker”). Here, time is suspended, the contents of souls are weighed, and Dance Dance Revolution holds the key to transmigration. On this fantastical journey into the underworld, a sister and brother face the ultimate question: If there is no love without pain, what does it mean to love? This is an autobiographical exploration of grief.

In Nick Payne’s Constellations, beekeeper meets quantum physicist. From there, Roland & Marianne’s love story unfolds across multiple universes, revealing infinite possibilities (and endings) between them as they grapple with The Big Questions (do we have free will? when is love worth fighting for? how does illness affect us?).
Historically, this one-act has been performed as a classic contemporary two-hander – two people, sparse set, dialogue focused. In our project, each character will be played by an actor-dancer pair, a divorce of voice from movement which allows us to explore the emotional depths that exist beyond language and develop a sensitivity to the nuances our bodies conceal and reveal.
