2013-2014 Season
SPRING: THE HOUSE OF AUNTS
Adapted by Annabeth Leow
AATP is proud to present a student-written play adapted by AATP board member Annabeth Leow '16. The House of Aunts is based on Zen Cho's short horror/comedy story about a vampire girl's experiences with her six undead aunties and her first experiences with love. Sixteen year-old Ah Lee is trying to live a normal life with her quirky aunties, a feat difficult enough without having to deal will a deep family secret: all seven women are pontianaks, the ghosts of women who have died in childbirth, newly alive in Malaysian lore as creatures that feed on human flesh. When Ah Lee begins to fall in love with Ridzual, a boy in her class, she finds it harder to hide the reality of who she really is. Ah Lee is forced to decide how much she values her cherished "normal life," the self-induced illusions of her own existence, and the customs with which she was raised.

WINTER: YELLOW FACE
By David Henry Hwang
What is an Asian musical? Is it permissible to dress up as another race? AATP, Stanford Savoyards, and STATIC joined forces for a community discussion about My Fair Lady, The Mikado, and the issues surrounding the representation of Asians onstage following AATP's staged reading of Yellow Face by preeminent Asian-American playwright David Henry Hwang. Yellow Face is a satirical mock-documentary that explores what it means to be Asian and American and lets nobody off the hook. Yellow Face was a nominee for the 2008 Pulitzer Prize.

WINTER: MY FAIR LADY
By Alan Jay Lerner & Frederick Loewe
In the backdrop of Edwardian London, Eliza Doolittle dreams of leaving behind her life as a Cockney flower girl in favor of grander schemes. After meeting Professor Henry Higgins, Eliza becomes the focus of a friendly bet. Higgins has 6 months to teach Eliza proper English and pass her off as a true lady at the Embassy Ball. Wit, humor, and heart ensue.
The AATP production of My Fair Lady, inspired by Orientalism in fashion and the history of white British and Asian tensions in 1912 London, reinvigorates this classic narrative with a new sense of struggle and triumph as an Asian Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins explode the traditional molds of rigid high society.
